Responsible packaging waste management

The entire product life cycle

Environmental responsibility does not end when a product is delivered. That is why we consider the entire life cycle of the materials and packaging we use – from their careful selection and use to proper sorting, recovery and recycling.

At NOVUM, we want to make responsible waste management easier. Clear sorting guidelines help ensure that materials are handled correctly, reduce waste and allow valuable resources to be reused.

Proper sorting helps valuable materials remain in circulation for longer.

Packaging waste sorting

Responsibility for packaging extends throughout its entire life cycle – including the stage at which it becomes waste. That is why we provide information that helps users identify the material composition of packaging, sort it correctly and place it in the appropriate waste stream.

Following the labelling and local waste sorting rules facilitates the separate collection, sorting and recycling of paper and cardboard, plastics, metals and glass. This allows more valuable raw materials to be recovered and reused instead of ending up in mixed waste.

Correct sorting helps reduce waste and lowers the demand for primary raw materials.

Sorting rules for packaging and products no longer in use

All packaging should be sorted by material type and placed in the appropriate, clearly labelled waste containers, in accordance with local waste-sorting rules.

Cardboard

Place cardboard in the paper and cardboard recycling container. Before disposal, remove any plastic film, expanded polystyrene, other inserts and adhesive tape. This helps ensure that the cardboard can be processed correctly.

Plastic film, protective straps and plastic bags

Place these materials in the designated plastics collection container. Wherever possible, separate different materials and remove labels or other attachments to support effective recycling.

Pallets

Standardised pallets, such as EPAL-certified pallets, should remain in circulation through pallet exchange systems. If a pallet is still fit for purpose and has not become waste, it may be sold or passed on for reuse. Damaged pallets should be taken to authorised pallet collection or repair facilities holding the permits required to manage waste.

Furniture, moulded components and other products

These should be treated as bulky waste and sent for recovery or recycling. They must not be burned in domestic stoves or fireplaces.

Electrical and electronic components

Electrical and electronic equipment, such as displays, computers, tablets and cables, must be taken to designated WEEE collection points or returned through an applicable take-back scheme when new equipment is delivered. Always follow local regulations governing waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Batteries and accumulators

Waste batteries and accumulators must be collected separately and taken to designated collection points. Place them in the appropriate collection containers to prevent environmental contamination and enable proper recycling. Collection containers for portable batteries are available at participating retail outlets.

Quality management certified to ISO 9001:2015

NOVUM operates in accordance with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. Our certification confirms that our processes are structured, controlled and regularly reviewed.

The system covers every key stage – from design and material selection through manufacturing to preparing equipment for delivery. This enables us to maintain a consistent standard of workmanship.

ISO 9001:2015 also requires us to monitor and continually improve our processes. For you, this means working with a manufacturer that manages quality in a systematic and documented way.

FSC®-certified wood

Selected NOVUM collections use FSC®-certified wood, providing assurance that the material comes from responsibly managed FSC-certified forests or other controlled sources. FSC standards address both the protection of forest resources and respect for the rights of workers and local communities.

FSC Chain of Custody certification enables the origin of wood to be traced at every stage – from the forest through processing to the finished product. This allows us to make informed choices and select materials that meet defined environmental and social requirements.

Choosing FSC®-certified wood supports responsible forest management and helps mitigate the risk of sourcing material from illegal or uncontrolled sources. It is one of the practical ways in which we combine durable equipment with care for natural resources.

Frequently asked questions

1 Why is it important to sort packaging waste correctly?

Correct sorting allows valuable raw materials to be recovered and reused in production processes. This helps reduce waste, the consumption of primary raw materials and the environmental impact of packaging.

2 How should packaging from NOVUM products be disposed of?

Individual packaging components should be separated according to the materials from which they are made and placed in the appropriate waste streams. Cardboard, plastic film, strapping and other protective materials should not be disposed of together if they can be easily separated.

3 How should cardboard boxes be disposed of?

Cardboard boxes should be placed in the paper and cardboard waste stream. Before disposal, remove any plastic film, expanded polystyrene, adhesive tape and other components made from different materials. This makes subsequent sorting and recycling easier.

4 What should I do with plastic film, strapping and plastic bags?

Packaging film, plastic bags and other plastic components should be separated from cardboard and placed in the appropriate plastics waste stream, in accordance with local waste-sorting rules.

5 What should I do with a pallet after delivery?

If the pallet is still fit for use, the best option is to reuse it or pass it on for further use. Standardised pallets can be returned through pallet exchange schemes. Damaged pallets should be taken to an appropriate collection or repair facility, or to an authorised waste management operator.

6 What should I do with a NOVUM product at the end of its useful life?

Large equipment components, furniture and other products should be transferred to the appropriate waste collection and treatment system. If a product contains different materials, they should – wherever possible and safe – be separated before being sent for recovery or recycling.

7 How should electrical and electronic components be disposed of?

Electrical and electronic components must not be disposed of with unsorted municipal waste. They should be taken to designated WEEE collection points or other facilities authorised to accept this type of equipment.

8 Where should batteries and accumulators be taken?

Waste batteries and accumulators must be collected separately and taken to designated collection points. They should not be placed in general waste containers, as they require specialist treatment.

9 Where can I find local waste-sorting rules?

Collection methods for certain types of waste may vary depending on the local waste management system. If in doubt, check the current rules published by the relevant local authority or contact your local waste collection operator.

10 Should all packaging be recyclable?

The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sets requirements intended to increase the recyclability of packaging and improve its separate collection. Appropriate packaging design and correct sorting after use are intended to allow as much material as possible to return to circulation.

11 Will packaging carry labels that make waste sorting easier?

The PPWR provides for the introduction of a harmonised packaging labelling system across the European Union. Its aim is to help users identify the material composition and sort packaging waste correctly.

12 Why does NOVUM provide information on how to manage waste?

We want responsibility for our products to extend beyond their design and use to what happens to the materials and packaging afterwards. Clear information helps our customers sort waste correctly and increases the amount of material that can be recovered and reused.
